I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their cooperation on my audio interviews and video’s. I also want to thank VMware for yet another great VMworld. During the past week I have spoken with many people and created a lot of videos which are bundled in a little widget. Stay cool and hope to see you soon.

At the Vmworld 2008 in Las Vegas I looked up Scott Herold, a software and Systems architect who is a pioneer in the virtualization industry. Recognized subject matter expert and co-author of two virtualization books surrounding VMware technologies. Current focus is on technical analysis and alignment of M&A activity within virtualization.

Already a very capable application, the ability to extend the VMware Infrastructure (VI) client beyond its original intent is what makes the plugin architecture so powerful. From incorporating graphical storage VMotion (SVMotion) functionality to implementing integrated secure shell (SSH), the VI plugin architecture allows third-party developers to customize VI into exactly the virtualization infrastructure that they need. This session aims to educate audience members on the usefulness of VI plugins and how to create everything from the most basic plugin that launches a web page to the more advanced variety that can enable third-party workflows. Companies have been delivering desktops via Terminal Services for over a decade. When Microsoft added the remote desktop capability to Windows XP seven years ago, people said “Hey, now we can connect to remote Windows XP single user sessions instead of Terminal Server.” And just like that, VDI was born. VDI and Terminal Server share a lot of common traits—both are classified as server-based computing solutions, and both have very, um, “passionate” supporters. So what’s the deal today? Is the world about VDI “versus” Terminal Server? Is it VDI “and” Terminal Server? In this session, Brian Madden will take a no-nonsense look at VDI and Terminal Server technologies. He’ll discuss what’s real and not real today, and he’ll explore where each technology is appropriate. Most importantly, he’ll look ahead to the Windows 7 timeframe. Site Recovery Manager, VMware's recently-released product for automated disaster recovery, enables organizations to reliably meet their recovery time objectives across their virtualized infrastructure, from their desktop infrastructure to their server applications. In this session we will describe how Site Recovery Manager simplifies the setup of recovery plans, enables non-disruptive testing, and automates failover for virtual infrastructure. We will also show a demonstration of using Site Recovery Manager to fail over real applications, including both desktop and server components. 

I didn’t want to miss the VMworld Party at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. I enjoyed live entertainment and racing activities. The cars can speed around the track at 140 mph, I raced a go-cart, jump on a Big Wheel, and tested my pit crew skills. I also enjoyed the live entertainment and refreshments and experienced the unique venue. I created a short movie.
