Scott Herold has finally gotten around to creating some videos of PowerGUI in action when managing a VMware infrastructure. This extends his primer on getting started with PowerShell and PowerGUI. He has created 5 new videos that are best viewed in the following order:

Herco van Brug  released a new version of EDA, an appliance dedicated to deploying ESX servers fast and easy. It has a scriptbuilder to quickly create %post-scripts.

New in 0.87:

VMware vCenter Converter lets users quickly, easily and affordably convert Microsoft Windows and Linux based physical machines and third party image formats to VMware virtual machines. It also converts virtual machines between VMware platforms.

This morning there was rumour going around on Twitter that some VMworld bloggers had received a DHL package with a mysterious device called the Flip. Viktor van den Berg over at the Dutch Vmug was the first one who broke the news. He received a small video camera with 2 GB of memory and software which enables uploading the video footage directly to YouTube. The first thing I thought was; there goes my video career. I started with filming events back in 2007, my first video recording was the VMware TSX 2007 keynote in Nice featuring Richard Garsthagen, the same person who’s so kind to send all the bloggers a Flip. After that I got the hang of it and brought my camera to every major event. You can find my video footage at YouTube and Vimeo. I even won the VMware video contest and still enjoy my Alienware Laptop very much. Is this all goming to an end? Every blogger is a potential video blogger now, or does it take more than a flip to become a video blogger? Of course it does, so I’m going to help all the flippers with some video production tips.

• Get physically close to your subject
• Film scenes using more than just one shot
• Film more than just your subject
• Film at the same height as your subject
• Control lighting
• Edit, and be ruthless while editing
• Experiment, and read the manual

KB Article 1007566 gives us insight in the snapshot deletion progress. During the snapshot deletion process, it is difficult to observe the progress. While the snapshot deletion is taking place, the following occurs:

• The hostd process does not respond
• It is difficult to determine status of snapshot deletion

Resolution, establish a SSH session to the ESX host and use following command to verify the snapshot process is still running:
 
#watch "ls -lhut time-style=full-iso *.vmdk"

This VMotion error was new to me, it happened during my DSA training this afternoon.

Troubleshooting Migration compatibility error: Currently connected network interface uses network, which is configured for different offload or security policies.

When performing a VMotion migration the following compatibility error is displayed:

• Unable to migrate from <source server> to <destination server>: Currently connected network interface '<device>' uses network '<network>', which is configured for different offload or security policies on the destination host than on the source host.

This unable to migrate error indicates that the source and destination servers have different security or offload settings configured on the virtual switch or portgroup that the virtual machine is connected to. The security and offload settings between virtual switches need to be the same to ensure that the functionality of the virtual machines is not affected upon migration.
