VMware Integrated OpenStack (VIO) is a VMware supported OpenStack distribution that makes it easier for IT to run a production-grade OpenStack-based deployment on top of their existing VMware infrastructure. VIO enables IT admins to quickly and easily deploy and operate a production grade OpenStack cloud while giving developers the standard OpenStack APIs on a reliable platform.

This e-Learning course provides an overview of the features, architecture, operations, troubleshooting, and management of VIO. VMware Virtual SAN Diagnostics and Troubleshooting Reference Manual

VMware’s Virtual SAN is designed to be simple: simple to configure, and simple to operate. This simplicity masks a sophisticated and powerful storage product.

The purpose of this document is to fully illustrate how Virtual SAN works behind the scenes: whether this is needed in the context of problem solving, or just to more fully understand its inner workings.

Virtual SAN 6.0 comes with a Health Services plugin. This feature checks a range of different health aspects of Virtual SAN, and provides insight into the root cause of many potential Virtual SAN issues.

The recommendation when triaging Virtual SAN is to begin with the Virtual SAN Health Services. Once an issue is detected, the Health Services highlights the problem and directs administrators to the appropriate VMware knowledgebase article to begin problem solving.

Please refer to the Virtual SAN Health Services Guide for further details on how to get the Health Services components, how to install them and how to use the feature for troubleshooting common Virtual SAN issues.

NSX for vSphere Log Insight Content Pack

The NSX for vSphere Log Insight Content Pack provides powerful operational reporting and alerting visibility for all sources of log data within NSX.

Each major NSX functions (logical switching, routing, distributed firewalls, VXLAN gateways, and edge services) are represented within this content pack via custom dashboards, filters, and alerts.

This graphically rich, content pack is essential for analyzing and identifying NSX configuration, performance, security and trend related problems. The twelve NSX dashboards are easily selectable with intuitive mouse clicks.

NSX log data is quickly sorted based upon user defined time intervals, and within seconds the data is presented graphically via bar graphs, pie charts and raw data collection widgets.

Reference Architecture: Creating a VMware Software-Defined Data Center

This reference architecture describes an implementation of a software-defined data center (SDDC) usingVMware vCloud® Suite Enterprise 5.8, VMware NSX for vSphere 6.1, VMware IT Business Management Suite Standard Edition 1.1, and VMware vCenter Log Insight 2.0 to create an SDDC.

This SDDC implementation is based on real-world scenarios, user workloads, and infrastructure system configurations. The configuration uses industry-standard servers, IP-based storage, and 10-Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) networking to support a scalable and redundant architecture.

An overview of the solution and the logical architecture as well as results of the tested physical implementation are provided. Consult with your VMware representative as to how to modify the architecture to suit your business needs.

VMware EVO: RAIL Hyper-Converged Infrastructure Appliance

With EVO: RAIL, customers experience a radically new, end-to-end user experience that drives simplicity. EVO: RAIL Deployment, Configuration, and Management streamline initial setup and ongoing operations.

Deployment - EVO: RAIL deployment is simple, with just four steps:

Configure your network (VLANs and top-of-rack switch). Instructions are provided in the EVO: RAIL User Guide.
Rack and cable.
Power on EVO: RAIL.
Connect a laptop to the TOR switch, point your browser to EVO: RAIL, and answer configuration questions.

Within minutes EVO: RAIL is configured and ready to create VMs!

Configuration - EVO: RAIL Configuration has three options: Just Go! or Customize Me! or Upload Configuration File.

With Just Go!, EVO: RAIL automatically configures a default set of IP addresses and hostnames for extremely fast deployment in a green-field scenario. Configure your TOR switch and click the Just Go! button. All you have to create are two passwords.

With Customize Me!, customers can specify the following configuration parameters:

Hostnames for vCenter Server and ESXiTM hosts naming scheme • Networking (IP ranges and/or VLAN ID): ESXi, Virtual SAN, vSphere vMotion®, vCenter Server, VM Networks
Passwords: ESXi hosts and vCenter Server, optional Active Directory authentication
Globals: Time zone; your existing NTP, DNS, and Proxy servers; logging: vCenter Log Insight or third-party syslog server

With Upload Configuration File, an existing json configuration file can be selected and uploaded.

EVO: RAIL implements data services, creates the new ESXi hosts, and configures vCenter Server. The final screen contains the link to EVO: RAIL Management.

Management EVO: RAIL Management provides a dashboard to view all virtual machines and arrange them with sorting and filtering. Users create virtual machines with only a few clicks to select the guest OS, VM size, VLAN, and security options. EVO: RAIL simplifies virtual machine sizing by offering single-click small, medium, and large configurations, as well as single-click security policies.

EVO: RAIL Management revolutionizes live compute management with health monitors for CPU, memory, storage, and VM usage for entire EVO: RAIL clusters, individual appliances, and individual nodes. EVO: RAIL Management streamlines log collection, licensing, and offers language choice for globalization. It also provides notifications and tracks tasks.

EVO: RAIL Management radically simplifies scale-out. Increasing compute, networking, and storage resources is as easy as powering up a new appliance to join an existing EVO: RAIL cluster. EVO: RAIL automatically distributes the configuration to seamlessly add new appliances with zero additional configuration.

EVO: RAIL Management allows users to check for vCenter, ESXi, and EVO: RAIL software upgrades. EVO: RAIL downloads and installs any patches for these VMware products. With a minimum of four independent ESXi hosts in an EVO: RAIL cluster, updates are non-disruptive and require zero downtime.
