Horizon View 5.3.1 on VMware Virtual SAN - Quick Start Guide

VMware Virtual SAN is a software-defined storage technology that is available with vSphere 5.5 Update 1 (or later). Virtual SAN is a core component of vSphere that aggregates local server-attached storage (local storage on a vSphere host/server) and provides a datastore that is visible to all hosts within a vSphere cluster. VMware Virtual SAN is optimized for use with Horizon View 5.3.1.

Virtual SAN implements a policy-based approach to storage management. These policies define virtual machine storage requirements, such as capacity, performance, and availability. Storage is provisioned and automatically configured according to these policies.

The above characteristics of the Virtual SAN architecture are highly beneficial to virtual desktop environments that use Horizon View 5.3.1. Further, the architecture supports standard vSphere features that require shared storage, such as HA, vMotion, and DRS. Virtual SAN eliminates the need for an external shared storage infrastructure and simplifies storage configuration and virtual machine provisioning activities.

Latest Fling from VMware Labs - Horizon View Configuration Tool

The Horizon View Configuration Tool automates Horizon View 5.3 installation and deployment. It removes the complexities and manual steps required for setting up a basic Horizon View deployment.

The vCT ships as a virtual appliance with all the required VMware components to set up your Horizon View environment. After providing a Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 ISO, an ESX host (not managed by vCenter), a few parameters, and licenses, the tool will provision your environment dynamically and automatically.

The vCT deploys the following components:

Virtual machine with Active Directory Domain Controller configured (or you may integrate with the existing DC in your environment)
Virtual machine with Horizon View Connection Server installed
Virtual machine with Horizon View Composer installed
vCenter Server Appliance virtual machine deployed and configured

VMware Horizon View 5.3 and Google Chromebook

Initially available to customers as an on-premise service, the joint solution is expected to be delivered as a fully managed, subscription DaaS offering by VMware and other vCloud Service Provider Partners, in the cloud or within hybrid deployments. Users will be able to access their Windows applications, data and desktops using VMware's Blast HTML5 technology from a Web-based application catalog on their Chromebook. In addition, VMware Horizon DaaS will provide enterprises with a choice between a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) or Remote Desktop Services (RDS) connection.
