Upgrading to VMware vCenter Operations Manager 5.7.1

vCenter Operations Manager 5.7.1 is the latest release of VMware's integrated operations suite, converging performance, capacity, and configuration management. This new release introduces the following features and enhancements.

Performance Report Pack

This release introduces new performance report pack. By default, reports now include operations status report for line of business virtual machines, alert and performance trend, cluster utilization trend, average and peak virtual machine storage latency. With these reports you can get a consolidated operational status for a group of virtual machines and identify the clusters, datastores, or virtual machines have had performance problems. You can assess any impact to performance in terms of performance or health degradation, as well as determine which datastores had performance problems for the given time and identify the impacted virtual machines from a given datastore. Launch in Context

vCenter Operations Manager is enhanced to offer in-context application launch capability. Using this feature, you can configure a button or menu item to launch an external application using a URL in a specific context defined by the active UI element and selected object. For example, you can add an "Open in" drop-down menu that launches the vCenter Web user interface, navigating to the details of a selected virtual machine. In the same menu, there might be other items that launch into Hyperic or Log Insight for the same virtual machine.

vCenter Log Insight Integration

This release introduces integration with vCenter Log Insight (GA available in Q3 2013) and vCenter Operations Manager. Log Insight can be configured to send alerts to vCenter Operations Manager about vCenter Server objects. In the vSphere UI, vCenter Operations displays links to launch Log Insight in-context from the alerts details page and from the objects details page.

vSphere Dashboards in the Custom UI

The vSphere group in the Dashboards menu contains several default dashboards for managing virtual objects in a vSphere environment. These default dashboards are available to all members of the Administrators, Operators, and Users user groups. This release introduces the following default vSphere dashboards:

Troubleshooting Dashboard
VM Utilization Dashboard
VM Performance Dashboard
Host Utilization Dashboard
Cluster Utilization Dashboard
Datastore Performance Dashboard
Datastore Space Dashboard
Heatmaps Dashboard
Alerts Dashboard

This video will show you some of the new features and how to upgrade to version 5.7.1. This procedure is applicable when updating to vCenter Operations Manager 5.7.1 vApp from the following product versions. vCenter Operations Manager 5.0, 5.0.1, 5.0.2, 5.0.3, 5.6, and 5.7.1, including any Hotfix versions.

VMware vCenter Log Insight is the new solution of VMware for log management and analytics. It delivers superior technology for automated log management through log analytics, aggregation, and search, and an easy to use user interface. Log Insight provides the operational intelligence needed to proactively enable service levels and operational efficiency in dynamic hybrid cloud environments.

VMware vCenter Log Insight addresses these challenges and enables improved quality of service, operational efficiency and continuous compliance.

Log Insight includes the following key capabilities:

Collects and analyzes all types of machine-generated log data, e.g. application logs, network traces, configuration files, messages, performance data, system state dumps, and more.
Enables administrators to connect it to everything in their environment, e.g. operating systems, applications, storage arrays, firewalls, network devices etc., providing a single location to collect, store, and analyze logs at scale.
Features an intuitive GUI-based interface that makes it easy to run simple interactive searches as well as deep analytical queries for quick, actionable insights.
Automatically chooses the best visualization for your data, saving you valuable time.
Adds structure to all types of unstructured log data, enabling administrators to troubleshoot quickly, without needing to know the data beforehand.
Delivers real-time monitoring, search, and analytics, coupled with a dashboard for stored queries, reports, and alerts, enabling correlation of events across multiple tiers of a hybrid cloud environment.
Comes with built-in knowledge and native support for vSphere.
Integrates with the VMware vCenter Operations Management platform to bring unstructured data (e.g. log files) together with structured data (e.g. metrics and KPIs), offering a significantly enhanced solution for end-to-end operations management.

Public Beta Program Opens to Foster Community Input

To encourage broad product feedback and testing from customers and partners, VMware vCenter Log Insight is now available for download via a public beta program. Participants can provide detailed product feedback, rank features and request new capabilities via the public beta program site at: http://communities.vmware.com/community/vmtn/vcenter/vcenter-log-insight.

VMworld 2013 session voting is open to everyone

VMworld 2013 session voting is open from April 23 till May 6. You will be required to login to your vmworld.com account to participate. If you do not have a vmworld.com account, you can set one up for free. This is a global voting process, approximately 80% of sessions selected will be presented at both VMworld 2013 Europe and US.

Once you login to the voting site, you can select a Track, Area of Interest or do a Keyword Search (Session ID, title, sloof, etc.) to find specific sessions. You can vote on as many sessions as you’d like. You can only cast one vote per session. For sessions that you like and would like to see in the VMworld program, click on the “Thumbs Up” symbol next to the Session ID. You will receive confirmation that your vote has been counted.

To remove a vote, you will need to click on the on the “Thumbs Up” symbol again and this will remove the vote. Your votes will votes be saved and you will be able to view them each time you login to the voting site. I've submitted two sessions on my own and one with Duco Jaspars over at vConsult this year:

VMware High Availability offers several options to configure failover capacity for a cluster. This session will show you the different options and their pitfalls. You will learn how to configure vSphere HA to tolerate a specified number of host failures. With the Host Failures Cluster Tolerates admission control policy, vSphere HA ensures that a specified number of hosts can fail and sufficient resources remain in the cluster to fail over all the virtual machines from those hosts.

New Technical White Paper - VMware vCloud Director Infrastructure Resiliency Case Study

VMware vCloud Director enables enterprise organizations to build secure private clouds that dramatically increase datacenter efficiency and business agility. Coupled with VMware vSphere, vCloud Director delivers cloud computing for existing datacenters by pooling vSphere virtual resources and delivering them to users as catalog-based services. It helps users build agile infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) cloud environments that greatly accelerate the time to market for applications and the responsiveness of IT organizations.

Resiliency is a key aspect of any infrastructure—it is even more important in IaaS solutions. This technical paper was developed to provide additional insight and information regarding the use of VMware vSphere PowerCLI to automate the recovery of a vCloud Director–based infrastructure. In particular, it focuses on automation of the recovery steps for vCloud Director 1.5–managed VMware vSphere vApp workloads.

The recovery of management components can be achieved using VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager and will not be discussed. It is already available in the original VMware vCloud Director Infrastructure Resiliency Case Study. vSphere PowerCLI is a powerful command-line tool that enables users to automate all aspects of vSphere management, including network, storage, virtual machine, guest operating system (OS) and more. Included since the release of version 5.0.1, vSphere PowerCLI introduced support for vCloud Director.

vSphere PowerCLI is distributed as a Microsoft Windows PowerShell snap-in and includes more than 300 PowerShell cmdlets, along with documentation and examples.This technical paper discusses the use of PowerShell and PowerCLI to automate the recovery of vCloud Director resource clusters.

New Technical White Paper - VMware View 5 Infrastructure Resiliency with Site Recovery Manager

VMware View offers a personalized, device-neutral, end-user computing experience with increased security and control. It enables agile desktop solutions that quickly meet changing business needs and proactively protect against planned and unplanned downtime. This case study provides insight and information on how to increase availability and recoverability of a View infrastructure using VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager (SRM) and common disaster recovery (DR) tools and methodologies.

vCenter SRM automates the failover process of the VMware View management environment to enable fast, reliable recovery and meet specific Recovery Time Objectives (RTO).The architecture described here is an active/passive design, in which the entire View infrastructure operates within one datacenter until the failover scenario is invoked. This solution does not satisfy every use case or requirement for virtual desktop disaster recovery.

Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and Return on Investment (ROI), for example, were not evaluated during testing and implementation. However, this study does demonstrate a successfully tested DR solution for a View infrastructure that is easy to implement and support. Among the environments that can benefit from this solution are those that already include SRM and those where a virtual desktop use case has a definitive DR requirement.

Other solutions are possible for DR with VMware View, but they may be more complicated and less reliable. Although vCenter SRM is required for this specific solution, it is not a requirement for VMware View disaster recovery in general.

Getting Started with vSphere Web Client Programming - Setting up your development environment

This video is the first in a 3-part video series entitled "Getting Started with vSphere Web Client Programming" which will provide some insights as well as some deep-dive training and step-by-step demonstrations and examples of how you can setup a platform for developing your own solutions for the vSphere Web Client.

The three videos will cover the following respectively:

Setting up the development environment
Fundamentals of creating User Interface extensions
Fundamentals of creating Data View User Interface extensions

This video shows developers how to set up a platform for developing vSphere Web Client (VWC) solutions. It does this by:

Listing the vSphere environment necessary for developing VWC solutions
Listing the tool-chain required for developing VWC solutions
Showing a screencast of the download, installation, and configuration of the tool-chain
Showing a screencast of importing the VWC SDK (Software Development Kit) sample code into an STS (SpringSource Tool Suite) project

After watching, and following along with, this video, learners should be able to create their own development environment on a Microsoft Windows platform and import sample projects into their STS workspace

Note: As these three videos are aimed at providing a full class-room like training experience of the subject matter, the videos are actually quite long in duration with each video ranging between 45 minutes to 1 hour. VMworld 2012 Barcelona - VMworldTV Video Round-Up

The VMworld 2012 Europe has come to an end and everyone is slowly leaving the fabulous city of Barcelona. To all the people who made this year’s VMworld possible I want to say BIG thanks, this was one not to forget soon. If you’ve attended the event, there’s a strong possibility that you’ve seen me running behind a camera crew carrying some lights (yes was the roadie :)

We, VMworldTV created an insane amount of videos which will give you a good insight in what has been happening at the VMworld in Barcelona. The content of the videos is ranging from technical deep-dive demos to an interview with people like Steven Herrod and Pat Gelsinger, besides that we also had lots of fun with the HeteSambal contest.

I want to give a BIG compliment to my co-host Jeremy van Doorn, yes the guy with the beard :) Also BIG thanks goes out to our producer Ian Oakley and his team over at WhitestoneMedia. These guys where working day and night to capture, edit and upload all the videos.

Technical White Paper - VMware vCloud Director Resource Allocation Models

VMware vCloud Director enables users to build a private cloud–based infrastructure as a service (IaaS) offering within their organization. By providing a secure, on-demand ability for end users to deploy workloads, companies can realize a level of agility previously thought impossible.

Resource design for vCloud Director involves examining requirements to determine how best to partition and organize resources. With the commoditization of infrastructure resources, the ability to scale them becomes increasingly important. When designing for vCloud Director, keep in mind that the ultimate consumers of the product are the end users of the system.

Taking a top-down approach to vCloud Director design necessitates an understanding of the new abstractions introduced in the vCloud API and how they map to traditional VMware vSphere® objects. This paper was developed to provide additional insight and information as to how vCloud Director allocation models relate to vSphere resource management. VMware vSphere Metro Storage Cluster (VMware vMSC) is a new configuration within the VMware Hardware Compatibility List. This type of configuration is commonly referred to as a stretched storage cluster or metro storage cluster. It is implemented in environments where disaster/downtime avoidance is a key requirement.
