VMware maakt zijn GSX-virtualisatiesoftware volgende week gratis, meldt de nieuwsdienst van CNet. Met die stap zou het bedrijf zijn positie als marktleider bij virtualisatie-oplossingen voor x86-systemen willen consolideren. GSX Server is één van de virtualisatieproducten die het door EMC overgenomen VMware voert. Het is een softwarelaag die het mogelijk maakt op een Windows- of Linuxmachine afzonderlijke compartimenten in te richten die onafhankelijk van elkaar zijn en elk een eigen kopie van een besturingssysteem kunnen draaien. VMware brengt deze software nu nog voor 1400 dollar voor een dual-coreprocessor en 2800 dollar voor zwaardere systemen op de markt. In de vorm van ESX brengt VMware een geavanceerdere versie van virtualisatiesoftware op de markt. ESX draait rechtstreeks op de hardware, zonder tussenkomst van een besturingssysteem, en presteert daardoor beter. Door de GSX-variant gratis te maken, zou VMware een groter publiek kunnen trekken en mogelijk ook meer klanten in de ESX-variant kunnen interesseren. In ieder geval zou de stap ook een dam opwerpen tegen de opkomende concurrentie. In de Linuxgemeenschap vindt virtualisatietechnologie momenteel zijn weg naar de belangrijkste distributies, en Microsoft zal de functionaliteit opnemen in de volgende versie van Windows.
